📍Position of Adverbs

📝Adverbs can go in different positions in a sentence, depending on the type of adverb. Learning the right place is very important, because in Portuguese the word order is often different.

1️⃣Adverbs of Manner, Place, and Time

📝These usually go at the end of the sentence (after the object or main verb).

  • 🗣️She speaks English fluently. (manner)
  • 🏞️They are playing outside. (place)
  • 📅We met them yesterday. (time)

👉Order rule (if more than one adverb): Manner → Place → Time

  • 💃She danced beautifully (manner) at the party (place) last night (time).

2️⃣Adverbs of Frequency

📝(always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never)

These usually go before the main verb, but after be.

  • 👫He always helps his friends. (before main verb)
  • 📺They never watch TV in the morning.
  • She is always late. (after be)

3️⃣Adverbs of Degree

📝(very, quite, too, enough, almost, completely)

These usually go before the adjective or adverb they modify.

  • 🎬The movie was very interesting.
  • 🏃He runs quite fast.

👉With enough, it goes after the adjective or adverb:

  • 📏She isn't tall enough.
  • 💪He didn't work hard enough.

4️⃣Adverbs of Certainty

📝(probably, definitely, surely, certainly)

These usually go before the main verb, but after be.

  • 🤔She probably knows the answer.
  • They will definitely arrive on time.
  • 🏆He is surely the best player.

5️⃣Adverbs at the Beginning (Front Position)

📝Some adverbs can go at the start of the sentence for emphasis.

  • 🍀Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
  • Suddenly, it started to rain.
  • 🚶Usually, I walk to school.

6️⃣Common Mistakes ❌✅

  • He goes always to the gym.
    He always goes to the gym.
  • She sings good.
    She sings well.
  • They tomorrow will arrive.
    They will arrive tomorrow.
