📊Comparative and Superlative Adjectives

📝Adjectives are words that describe things (big, small, interesting, beautiful). We can compare them using comparatives and superlatives.

1️⃣Comparatives (two things)

📝We use comparatives to compare two people, places, or things.

👉Form:

Short Adjectives (1-2 syllables)

adjective + -er + than

big → bigger small → smaller tall → taller fast → faster old → older

Long Adjectives (3+ syllables)

more + adjective + than

more interesting more beautiful more difficult more expensive more comfortable
  • 🏠My house is bigger than yours.
  • 🎬This movie is more interesting than that one.
  • 🌡️Today is hotter than yesterday.
  • 💰This car is more expensive than mine.

2️⃣Superlatives (three or more things)

📝We use superlatives to say that something is the most.

👉Form:

Short Adjectives (1-2 syllables)

the + adjective + -est

the biggest the smallest the tallest the fastest the oldest

Long Adjectives (3+ syllables)

the most + adjective

Double Final Consonant

big → bigger → biggest hot → hotter → hottest fat → fatter → fattest thin → thinner → thinnest

Change Y to I

happy → happier → happiest easy → easier → easiest busy → busier → busiest

Ending in -E (just add -r or -st)

nice → nicer → nicest large → larger → largest safe → safer → safest late → later → latest
