Hello, and welcome to the Grammar Gameshow! Will is the host, and Leslie is the voice from the sky. Tonight, they are asking questions about the Present Simple and Present Continuous tenses.
First, they are meeting the contestants. There is a girl named Sarah, and there is a boy named Jim. The first round is a quick-fire round. Will is showing them sentences. He is asking: “Is it Present Simple or Present Continuous?”
The sentences come fast! “I never work very hard” – that is Present Simple! “I**’m sitting** at home” – that is Present Continuous! “Are you having dinner?” – Yes, that is Present Continuous too! “He doesn’t know” – that is Present Simple. “She isn’t coming home today” – that is Present Continuous.
Leslie explains the rules. The Present Simple talks about habits and facts. The Present Continuous talks about actions happening now. Jim has many points!
Then, there is a “True or False” round. Can both tenses talk about the future? Sarah says false, but she is wrong. Jim says true, and he is correct! “My flight leaves at 6:30 tomorrow” is Present Simple for the future. “I**’m playing** tennis tomorrow” is Present Continuous for the future.
The final question is about state verbs. Sarah knows the answer! She wins the game! There are many points for Sarah. She wins a picture of a holiday! Jim is not happy when the host is releasing the dogs! It is a very funny show!
